On August 6th, 2021 we held our event onboard the Training Ship GOLDEN BEAR. In spite of the COVID restrictions in place for the County of Oahu and City of Honolulu, we were able to host 75 guests from the Hawaii Maritime Transportation Industry and a few other Honolulu business supporters. It was a great social gathering of many long time friends, with great food and libations! The outdoor event was on the ‘patio deck’ of the aft house of the BEAR where cocktail receptions are usually held while in port.
Our host for the evening was the Master of the Training Ship GOLDEN BEAR, Capt. Louis Solana. We also had the President of the Cal Maritime Foundation, Mr. Robert Arp on hand. The Foundation has been a huge part of the success of the Lyman Scholarship Program and we are grateful for their partnership.
This event almost never happened, as we were not sure the BEAR would even be allowed into Honolulu Harbor until recently. Then we were not sure of the “status” of social gatherings that would be allowed, given the ever changing rules regarding the COVID Protocols. But in the end, our efforts were handsomely rewarded with a final amount of over $29,000 raised towards our scholarship endowment. We are extremely pleased with the continued support and kokua from our waterfront community.
